“Nico’s Magic Fort” has been a labour of love. I have made reading books to my grandchildren a priority with the hope of instilling in them a lifelong love of reading. When Covid-19 hit, the ability to read to them in person, with them on my knee, was lost. I read them books over Wi-fi but it is not the same. I thought that maybe by creating a special book for each of them, I could make up for the lost reading time we missed together because of the pandemic.
I wanted to create a children’s book for Nico that was fun and adventurous to match his personality. I got the idea for the book when I actually saw a play tent set up inside his house and went from there. Nico loves cross country skiing so I used that as a theme in the book. He also loves cycling and does a lot with his family so I used that as well. I am not sure what he wants to be when he grows up. A lot of kids want to be a firefighter, maybe a superhero. Who knows? The pirate and king of the castle are universal themes. At the end of the book he also dreams about being a policeman, a doctor, a rockstar, a surfer, a polo player and an astronaut. I’m sure Nico could make any these come true if he puts his mind to it. Okay, maybe not the superhero! |
